Dear WSRA Friends,
Thank you to all of our participants, family members and staff who joined us for another week of virtual summer programs! We look forward to seeing you during our virtual programs in August!
Here is the schedule of WSRA’s FREE virtual programs for the week of August 3. The Program Lead will open up the Zoom rooms approximately 5 minutes before each program, and each program will last up to 40 total minutes. Though it is not required, participants are encouraged to use the webcam through their computer, tablet or smart phone to assist with social interaction. When logging onto Zoom, we ask that participants type in their first name only (not last name). At this time, we will not be requiring families to register in advance, so participants and staff are able to attend virtual programs when able and interested and without advance notice.
MONDAY, AUGUST 3
(All ages) ‘GAMES GALORE: Sock Games’ with Amber
Join us for a fun morning of sock games! All the games we play have one key component…your socks! If you wish to join in on the fun please come prepared with 5-10 rolled up socks that look like balls, a bowl or bucket or laundry basket, things to use as bowling pins (toilet paper rolls, empty water bottles, dominoes, etc.), 2 taller items to create a goal (paper towels, small cones, plastic cups, etc.) create a bullseye target, chair and space to move around in. Wear your most comfortable clothes! There is only one rule…NO stinky socks allowed! ;)
(Ages 15 & Older) ‘TALK & DINE’ with Amber
Let's enjoy each other’s company over dinner (your choice of cuisine), similar to Walk & Dine but in the comfort of your home. If you won't be eating dinner during the time of this program, please still join us to socialize and catch up with friends! NOTE: Due to the great turnout that we have seen at this program, we will continue to use a Zoom feature called ‘breakout groups’. With this feature, we will break everyone into smaller groups to help reduce overstimulation and to allow everyone the chance to socialize more during the program.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 4
(All ages) ‘TUESDAY THEME DAY – Outer Space’ with Emily
An asteroid is headed straight for Earth but don’t worry we can stop it using the “Big Space Blaster”, only problem is we have to find the access code to activate it! We will work together to decipher the clues and discover the code. Once we destroy the asteroid we will continue our exploration and take a look at constellations and other fun features of space. A pencil, paper and a calculator will help us solve the code but are not required!
(All ages) ‘TRIVIA TUESDAY: Disney!’ with Emily
Calling all Disney lovers! Join us for an exciting afternoon filled with both classic and current Disney trivia questions!
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5
(Ages 15 & Older) ‘THE WAKE UP CREW’ with Jess
Come join in on some morning discussion and fun, with all your favorite friends. We will start off with a question of the day, then play some fun Guessing Games.
(All ages) ‘BINGO Bonanza: Let’s Go to the Zoo!’ with Amber
Lions and Tigers and Bears OH MY! One of my favorite summer trips is to the zoo. Since we haven’t been able to go yet, I am bringing the zoo to your living room. Please bring one (or more) of the zoo bingo cards attached to this email. For those that want a challenge you can print out the card with the animal description on it. I will only be showing the cards with the pictures so you will have to guess which animal the card is describing on your own as I won’t have the answers. But remember it is all for fun! See you there!
THURSDAY, AUGUST 6
(All ages) ‘ART with Emily – Matisse Inspired Collage’
Henri Matisse was a French artist, known for his use of color. After losing the ability to paint late in life, he explored and mastered the art of paper cut outs. Today we will make a Matisse art project by cutting out lots of colorful organic shapes, and then layering them to make an interesting collage. Supplies you will need: Black construction paper or card stock, various colors of construction paper, scissors, glue, and print out of the attached Matisse color by number printable if you do not have these supplies.
(All ages) ‘TONE IT UP THURSDAYS’ with Jess
In today's program- We will focus on toning up our upper body, with a mix of cardio movements. If you have dumbbell’s or any items at home to use as free weights, please feel free to bring them!
FRIDAY, AUGUST 7
(All ages) ‘MUSIC MADNESS’ with Lexie Gutierrez
Calling all music lovers! Join us for music with special guest Lexie Gutierrez where we will sing, dance, and have a good time. Be sure to bring yourself, an instrument to shake if you have one (even some rice, beans, or other small objects in a container will work), and most importantly- energy! This week is sure to be POPin'!
(All ages) ‘TAI CHI’ with Master Eric & Mr. Mike
Join our friends, Master Eric & Mr. Mike, as they guide us through relaxing Tai Chi movements. You will want to wear comfortable clothes and make sure you have plenty of space to move around. Movements can also be adapted to seated positions. All participants will be muted throughout the session and in order to see the instructors better once in Zoom, you can put your view in Speaker View. We hope to see you there!
We encourage you to continue checking out WSRA’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/WarrenSpecialRec, and Pinterest page at https://www.pinterest.com/WarrenSpecialRecreation for additional resources and updates. Please let us know if you have recommendations for virtual recreation programs, as we continue to welcome feedback and suggestions along the way.
If you would like to add any of your children/family member’s email addresses to this weekly email chain, please send me an email and I will add them to the list. We would be happy to include participants in the weekly emails to help promote independence and the learning of technology during this time. Additionally, if your family member is interested in having a one-on-one phone call or virtual Zoom session with any of our full-time staff members, let us know and we would be happy to set that up.
Please let our team know if you have any questions.
